Message From Scott Blades

Friends,
We hope you are well and starting to cool off after a very hot summer! Thank you for your support that allows us to continue to provide services to people living with HIV. Here are some community events and news you might be interested in: a short video from Jon and Noel sharing their powerful story, Pride events, a video message from Deirdre Demers, volunteer opportunities, and my reflections on Poz Café commemorating 25 years. Thank you — we’re grateful for the difference that you and your support make in the lives of people we serve as well as in creating a more inclusive and welcoming community.

Short Video Featuring Longtime TIHAN Supporters Noel and Jon

Noel Video Graphic Jon and Noel have been life partners for more than 27 years, and through all that time, they’ve been a key part of TIHAN. Hear them share a bit about their powerful story of Noel moving from a dark place in his life to becoming a fabulous TIHAN volunteer, Jon’s 30+ years of HIV awareness and support work, and how TIHAN helped their relationship survive and thrive.
Jon spearheaded the reconciling movement at St. Francis in the Foothills UMC, and was a key part of their HIV ministry (which would eventually morph into becoming TIHAN). Noel, who is living with HIV, was experiencing a number of health concerns and endured three months in the hospital. When TIHAN matched Noel with a CareTeam of supportive volunteers, and as his health improved, so did his engagement with TIHAN. After a few years, Noel transitioned from being the recipient of the CareTeam to being one of the volunteers on the CareTeam, helping support other people with HIV. And Noel was part of the small team of volunteers that started our Poz Café lunch and social program that has now served over 36,000 meals. 27 years later, Noel is the healthiest he’s ever been, and Jon and Noel continue to be key supporters of TIHAN!
Watch this 6-minute video of these two amazing men sharing about their journey together, and how intertwined their personal stories are with TIHAN’s story.

Join TIHAN in Showing Our Love and Support at Tucson Pride Festivities

Pride 2024 with jessWe hope you can join us in the fun and help represent TIHAN at the Tucson Pride Parade happening on Friday evening, 9/27* at Armory Park! This year, the parade will follow AIDSWalk, a fundraiser for SAAF, featuring food trucks, vendors, live performances, and fun for all ages! This year’s Pride Parade grand marshal is TIHAN volunteer (and Scott Blades’ husband) Jess Losoya!
If you have participated in a Pride event before, you know it’s fun and meaningful to be part of a celebration of humanity and diversity.  If this will be your first time, we trust that you will have a good time in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you are LGBTQ+ or an ally, your participation is needed — it’s important.  During these times with a rising tide of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination and hate, we need to be visible with our love and support of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.  Walking with TIHAN folks and showing your support is a key part of being an ally – not just in words, but in deed.  Don’t just stay on the sidelines, step up and be seen.  Please join us! We will have a decorated truck with a handful of spots for folks who want to ride, and we’ll have more folks walking behind the truck in the parade.

Please feel free to invite other friends and colleagues – all are welcome, including kids and families.  Donors, volunteers, CarePartners, friends, community members – everyone!
Please let Susannah Myerson, TIHAN’s Manager of Operations and Programs, (operationsmanager@tihan.org) know if you will be participating, so we can keep you informed on the specific details. Looking forward to seeing you there!
The actual Pride Festival is the following day, Saturday, September 28, and TIHAN will have a booth there too. Stop by and say hello! www.tucsonpride.org
*We wish it weren’t on a Friday evening during Shabbat services.  We didn’t schedule it – this is a community event scheduled by Tucson Pride.  TIHAN does not schedule our events on Friday evenings.

Scott’s Reflections on Poz Café Commemorating 25 Years of Good Food and Connecting People Living with HIV

Poz Cafe 25 Years Logo

26 years ago, we gathered a small group of people living with HIV and a handful of volunteers to talk about how to create a new program to bring together people living with HIV for peer support as new HIV medications were transforming their lives and their futures. Little did we know that this small group would create something so lasting and impactful, as Poz Cafe is now in its 25th year, having served more than 36,000 meals!

January 1999 was our first gathering of this new meal program which we called Poz Café (Poz—pronounced “pause”—is slang for positive, as in HIV-positive). Modeled in part after Phoenix-based Joshua Tree’s lunch and Cornerstone Fellowship’s GLIA (God’s Love in Action) luncheon, and the Strength for the Journey meals, our team gave our program its own special TIHAN flair. It started with just a handful of people with HIV attending the lunch, but grew quickly. And it’s changed greatly over the years, continually adapting but always keeping CarePartners at the heart.
